Community spirit alive and well

7th May 2021

When Clare first heard about Muswell Hill Foodbank towards the end of 2017, she had a feeling that many of her neighbours on Victoria Road N22 would want to join with her in offering it support. So she emailed and dropped notes through letterboxes and collected a substantial donation of food and toiletries in the run-up to Christmas. She did the same in the run-up to Christmas 2018.

Neighbours said they’d like to donate more regularly so Clare bought a big red bin that sits in her front garden where they can drop off donations whenever they want.

Soon after the start of the pandemic, Clare noticed a massive increase in donations from her neighbours as people wanted to do more to help those that were struggling.

“All the donors say they are really pleased to be helping,” she says, “even if it’s in a small way.”

A number of people living in the road are now doing regular deliveries for the foodbank and their teenage children are helping out too.

“It’s wonderful that some of the teenagers are helping out with sorting the food and with deliveries.  It’s an example of the great community spirit in Victoria Road.”
